We are looking for an HSE Coordinator who will provide technical advice to different projects in Angola to enable project teams to effectively implement HSE procedures and standards and manage and mitigate HSE risks.

As part of the exploration team this role will be critical in contributing to safe delivery of the mineral exploration projects in Angola.

Reporting to the HSE Principal Adviser and working in a challenging and exciting environment, you will be responsible for :

  • Design your role's routines and engage with your colleagues to build all in country HSE protocols
  • Having your PPE on and enjoying the outdoors while assisting Rio's team to implement the annual HSE plans, priorities, inspections, audits and preparing the reports focusing on risks that can kill or injury our people and impact the communities and the environment around we operate.
  • Take the lead and invite the team members to identify hazards, review risks, propose and implement controls during the risk management processes, ensuring risk management plans are established and implemented, reviewing project risk registers and management plans to ensure they are connected with Rio Tinto HSE standards and in country requirements.
  • Get ready to connect with contractors and new employees and have the HSE message spread out through inductions, training, and daily interactions.
  • Get documents, records and registers planned, created, and stored in our online platforms in an orderly way.
  • Producing HSE written content such as statistics, area findings, routine reports and reporting incidents.
  • Conducting investigations for Low and Moderate consequence incidents or near misses. Be curious and establish the facts, identify causes and findings.
  • Follow up on injuries and health concerns, get in touch with the investigation team and discuss appropriate actions.

  • Ensuring our workforce is healthy and leading the occupational health program along with our medical partners.
  • Ensuring contractor practices at a project level comply with Rio Tinto and statutory HSE standards and requirements, providing advice and workplace / on-site collaboration to assist contractors to comply with HSE standards and requirements.
  • Provide guidance to project team regarding Angola legal and voluntary obligations and leading the review of the HSE Obligation register with our legal partner.
  • Overseeing the work of junior staff and contractors, allocate work and prioritising tasks as required, developing local workforce capability in HSE practices, systems, and requirements.
  • Providing leadership in improving HSE culture and performance at the project level, by continuously providing performance feedback and saying "What went well" and looking for opportunities to improve the "even better if"

  • Courage and the ability to swiftly challenge plans when opportunities for improvement are identified Assisting in implementing annual HSE plans and priorities with a specific focus on translating plans and priorities into HSE actions at your site.
  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
  • Qualifications in a relevant discipline such as health, safety, environment and / or social sciences.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in similar HSE role. Experience in the resources and mineral exploration activities will be highly regarded.
  • Good HSE expertise applied to implementing HSE systems and processes in a complex operational environment, with field based and geographically dispersed workplaces.
  • Well-developed skills in delivering HSE training, including adapting HSE training and educational materials for the needs of specific audiences.
  • Sound organizational and project management skills to plan, manage and deliver work including the ability to manage within resource and budget constraints.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership in HSE at a project level with the ability to develop the skills of employees involved in HSE delivery
  • Practical problem-solving skills in researching and resolving HSE issues with the ability to develop solutions to non-standard problems.
  • Sound communication skills including the ability to write recommendations and reports for management and present information for a range of stakeholders.
  • Ability and licence to safely drive manual transmission light vehicles in on-road and off-road settings.
  • Ability to travel for field work and rosters
  • Ability to work productively in a multi-language, cross cultural environment.
  • Fluent in English and Portuguese
